Frank Iusi @frankiusi from Toronto, Canada

I would like to thank Agora for this opportunity to introduce myself.  The Agora platform provides an impactful and powerful service for the community of photographers.  Most exciting is the recognition Agora delivers.

My name is Frank Iusi and I was born in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I currently live in the beautiful Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

For more than a quarter-century, I have been transforming light, shadow and colour into compelling images, capturing the essence of a person, time or feeling.  My journey into visual arts began as a child, when I would ‘snap’ images of the world with my mind’s eye and transform them into emotionally laden, abstract interior canvasses.

With my first exposure to photography – a simple snapshot of myself on a pony – I realized that normal photographs failed to capture emotions, thoughts and the deeper realities of a subject as my mental images did.On a family trip to Italy in 1972, however, I learned that my great-uncle was a true photographer – one whose images portrayed the inner lives of people. In those days it seemed normal to shoot a portrait in a studio with your subject staring right into the lens, but his images were different.  The people my great-uncle photographed were going about their daily lives; a documentary and candid style of photography.

These early experiences set me on a unique path through photography, videography, commercial work, portraiture and, now, my emerging B & W fine art, photo impressionism and digital crypto art.

Impressions

For me, a photographer becomes a true artist when one feels deeply passionate about what is seen through the lens.  As photographer and viewer, “Distant Approach of a Friend” (B&W image of two horses in fog) connects us to that passion which lifts the spirit of the photo.  I believe that this is one of the main reasons that the Agora community has connected with the image.

My objective is to do much more than simply capture and display a carbon copy of what I see. Instead, I intend to invoke my images’ natural subjective and emotive qualities.New digital technologies are giving me different and unlimited tools to awaken the soul of an image. As part of the new wave of digital photographer/artists, my creative vision is helping forge a new form of contemporary art.The digital tools that photographers now have at their disposal are insisting that we advance our medium.  Like any artist exploring a new medium, we are stepping into the unknown. We explore and we discover.  Finally, through experience, skill and technology, I can do in reality, what my boyhood self did only in imagination – create images that capture emotion.
